Frequently Asked Questions About Analytical and Clinical Hypnotherapy Cardiff
What is Hypnotherapy?
Let us start with the first part of the word hypnotherapy and that is “hypnosis” (a phrase coined around 1841 by James Braid.) Which is just a pleasent stare of total relaxation. Have you ever drifted off into your own little world and were suddenly aroused out of it by someone calling your name several times? Perhaps listening to the grass grow on a farr off hill, as you did as a child, and they called it “day dreaming” it’s just the same as hypnosis..
Therapy: There are so many different approaches out there these days, but for this explaination, I will stick with Clinical and Analytical hypnotherapy.
Clinical/Suggestion Therapy: is as the name suggests. A form of suggestion to help you overcome simple problems as in Thumb Sucking, Nail Biting, Driving Test Nerves, Smoking Cessation and some WeightLoss.
Hypnoanalysis/Analytical Hypnotherapy: This is a very different approach to therapy unlike the approach above where you close your eyes and accept the suggestions givin and and after 50 minutes or so, open your eyes and all is right with your world. As with hypnoanalysis we both become Holmes and Watson and go in s earch of the underlying cause of your current condition. We are seeking your Moriarty. If this sound difficult nothing could be further from the truth. I simply induce you into a pleasant state of relaxation ofthen called hypnosis and then ask you to tell me what you are thinking! That’s it, noting too difficult at all. This approack can be a quick as 8 weekly one hour sessions, sometimes streaching out to 10-12, but if we go this far, I will not charge you for any sessions over 12, but there is an upper limit.
How many sessions will I need?
Suggestion Therapy: anything from 1 – 3 weekly sessions with a booster a little later on.
Ananytical Therapy: This take roughly 8 – 12 weekly one hour sessions. Each session lasts one hour, but should we go over time, then this is fine as I don’t go by the clock.
Is your therapy confidentail? Yes, very muh so. If I were to me you whem I’m out and about, I will ignore you, if someone call my office requesting to know how you are progressing with your therapy, I will ignore I even know you. Rest assured no one will ever know of our association. Even if it was your spouce who brought you to me in the first place, even if they are paying for your session, your therapy is sacrascant. It is none of their business.
Will I be unconsciou or lose control? Absolutely not, you remain in control at all times and you will remember everything that happens. Should a therapist suggest something that you find repugnant, then in all likelyhood, you would just open your eyes, slap him on the face and walk out. Note to self, you are always in control.
How long before I notice any difference? With Suggestion therapy it can be almost immediately.
With Analytical Therapy it can take several weeks, before you start to noticethings changing, things dont seem to be as bad as they once were. In fact, your family and friends may notice a difference well before you do.
Please note, that the personallity of both therapist and client has a lot to do with the otcome of the sessions.
Is there any proff that hypnotherapy actually works? Yes of course there is. Have a look at my testimionals page, or a deeper dive at Hypnotherapy Research & Evidence: What the Science Say?
Can everyone be hypnotised?
Most people can experience hypnosis because it is a natural state of focused attention and relaxation. However, people respond to hypnosis in different ways.
You do not have to be particularly imaginative or have a special personality to benefit from hypnotherapy. The important thing is your willingness to participate in the process.
Hypnosis is not something the therapist “does to you”. It is something you actively experience.
